When the topic of moving comes up, most start thinking about the packing and purging of their belongings. Hiring a moving company, buying moving supplies, and donating or selling items you don’t want to take with you are all part of the moving process. However, it’s not all that needs to be done.  Although that is a huge part of it, many important steps must be completed before, during, and after a move to ensure that you transition into your new place with ease.

Before You Move

Before moving day, there are some things you’ll need to get done.

·  Collect All Necessary Paperwork – There will be certain paperwork that you will need when you move to your new city. Documents like your social security card, birth certificate, driver’s license, and medical records are all important resources you may be asked for after moving. Securing these documents before moving from your city is a lot easier than travelling back to get the documents later. Secure this paperwork in advance since some documents aren’t provided on the spot.

·  Notify Your Home Security CompanyIf you have a home security system with alarm monitoring services, you’ll want to inform them of the move sooner rather than later. This is so that they can uninstall or shut off the alarm at the old property and transfer it to the new one. Since this will likely involve the assistance of an alarm specialist, you’ll want to let them know in advance so you can ensure the alarm has been properly uninstalled from the old location.

·  Start Your Job Hunt – Unless you’re moving close to your current job or you’re moving for a promotion in another city, you’ll need to start looking for places of employment prior to moving. Make sure that employers know that you’re relocating soon so that they will take your application into consideration. If you’re having a hard time getting a company to show interest, working with a local recruiter could help you get your foot in the door.

·  Cancel and/or Update Memberships – While most remember to switch their utility services over or to cancel the cable at their old house, there are some that forget to cancel other memberships. If you receive magazines, regular shipments of products, or anything else shipped/mailed to your house as a part of a membership you’ve signed up for, you’ll want to call and cancel or update them on your new address.

After You’ve Moved In

When you’ve arrived at your new place, here are some things you’ll need to complete:

·  Have electrical, heating, cooling, and plumbing systems serviced. – Though you may have had a home inspection and completed some repairs prior to purchasing the home, you’ll want to have all your systems serviced to ensure there aren’t any impending issues you’ll have to deal with. Contact an electrician, plumber, and HVAC professional to help you with routine maintenance.

·  Transfer schools – If you have children, you’ll need to get them properly transferred into the new school system. Contact the local board of education to find out what the process is. In many instances, your child will have to take a physical from a paediatrician to assess their health and ensure they have updated and required shots. You may also be required to provide a transcript from the previous school.

·  Find new doctors and medical professionals – Now that you’re in a new town, you will need to find a doctor, dentist, eye doctor, and other medical professionals to serve your and your family’s needs. Start looking for the best medical professionals in the area and schedule consultations to ensure they are a great fit for you and your loved ones.

·  Get settled in – Last, but not least, is getting settled into your home. This will likely take the longest as you’ll have to fill your home with furniture, pictures, appliances, devices, and more to make it feel like home.

Moving comes with a laundry list of responsibilities. As you can see, there’s a lot more to planning a move than hiring a moving company and stuffing your items into boxes. In order to move successfully, it’s important to make a checklist and start planning as far in advance as possible so you don’t forget these and other important tips to moving.
