Rats and mice are the most common rodents that will invade your home. You’ll probably first be aware that they are there when you find a trail of droppings. Or you may find some of your food has been chewed. This is why it is important to keep food in sealed containers and to make sure your sides and countertops are wiped clean.
If you think you have a rodent problem it is essential that you get an exterminator as quickly as possible. You may be surprised at how much damage these little creatures can do.
In fact rodents can carry a wide range of diseases, some of which can be seriously detrimental to your health.
You may wonder why these rodents are so attracted to your home; it’s not because you have spent time and money turning it into a beautiful place to live. Rodents have a much simpler view on life:
Warmth
As the fall begins the temperature will start to drop. Rodents don’t like cold temperatures and will often hibernate. However, to hibernate or simply stay warm during the colder months they need to have somewhere safe and snug to call home. This will ensure they don’t freeze over the winter and predators can’t eat them.
Your home is climate controlled to keep you warm; that makes t a very attractive option to any rodent. They can squeeze through the smallest of holes and retain a way in and out of your home without being noticed.
That’s why it’s so important to have an inspection by your local pest control firm; they will find any potential entry points and ensure they are blocked.
Food
Rodents also need food to survive and you have plenty of it in your home. A bonus from their perspective is that they are not fuzzy eaters. Whether you’re wiping crumbs onto the floor, leaving food on the side or even putting it in cupboards without sealing the packet; they will be able to detect it.
A few crumbs to you is a feast to them and enough to keep them going all day or even longer.
To reduce this risk you’ll need to keep all surfaces clean and ensure all your food is sealed inside containers.
Water
Just like any living creature rodents need water to survive. Any source of water is acceptable. You may leave water out for your dog or your cat; alternatively you may have a dripping tap.
Either of these options will be fine to keep the rodents happy.
These three elements are often available in a home; without you really being aware of it.
This is why it is essential that you keep your food in containers, don’t leave water standing round and seal up the entry / exit points.
If you don’t then you never know where these rodents will go at night while you’re sleeping. In fact this is probably something you don’t want to think about! It is better to stop them coming in rather than have to deal with the issue.
