If you just bought a brand new home with new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, chances are you will not have to worry about replacing your system anytime soon. But, if you have an older house with an older air conditioning unit, you may want to think about getting your HVAC system replaced. The rule of thumb is that if your HVAC system is older than ten years, you should get a new system.

You may not notice it, but your older HVAC system is likely causing you to pay more for your utility bill because it is less efficient and not circulating air well enough, which can cause dust and debris to spread in your home. Aquarius Home Services recommends bringing a professional in to assess your HVAC system. And, really, you should be doing an annual inspection of your HVAC system to make sure everything is in proper working order.

There are some tell-tale signs that it is time to replace your HVAC system.

  1. High Energy Bill

You will know that you need to replace your air conditioning unit when your monthly bills are higher than usual. Of course, it is normal for your bill to fluctuate in the summer or winter months when using the system more. Still, if you see consistent increases, then it is time for a replacement.

  1. Your House Is Too Hot or Too Cold

A tell-tale sign that your HVAC system needs replacing is when you cannot keep your home at a comfortable temperature. It may be the middle of summer, and you cannot find any reprieve from the heat because your HVAC system is not cooling the house enough. When your HVAC system can’t heat or cool the home enough, it may be due to a damaged thermostat, clogged filters, cracked ducts, or damage to the motor. And when your HVAC system cannot provide sufficient air to your home, something is seriously wrong, which can be a sign it needs to be replaced.

  1. Burning or Unusual Smells

If you notice a burning or unusual smell coming from your HVAC system, it is a sign that it needs to be replaced. If you are noticing these smells, it is wise to call a professional to inspect the problem. The smells could mean something electrical is wrong, and you do not want to electrocute yourself or try and fix a crossed wire and burn yourself. So, it is best to leave this one to the professionals.

  1. Poor Air Quality

If you start to see dust, mould, mildew or feel high humidity levels in your home, it is time to replace your HVAC system. Of course, no one wants to breathe that type of air into their lungs, so do your loved ones a favour and get a new HVAC system.

  1. Odd Sounds or Loud Noises

It is normal to hear the air conditioning unit turn on and off, but if you start hearing loud bangs, clangs, or whistling, it is time to get a replacement for your HVAC system. You may be able to repair it, but more often than not, loud or odd noises are signs of a bigger problem, and you will need a replacement.

  1. Repairs Cost More Than Replacing

This sign may be common sense, but if there are so many things wrong with your HVAC system that replacing it would cost less than repairing the damages, you should get a replacement for the safety of you and your loved ones. Plus, there are some pretty cool ones on the market nowadays.

Remember, the wear and tear of an HVAC system are normal, but you should know when to repair your HVAC system and when it is time to say, “out with the old and in with the new.”
