Last weekend, the Telford Town Park hosted the T-Party, a yearly event which saw live music, activities and even a funfair, but that was not all the Telford Town Centre had cause to celebrate that week, as the 250 million plan to improve the Southwater area progressed, bringing a new cinema and restaurants, as well as a library and hotel.
Having opened on August 7th, a week earlier than its original planned opening date of 15th August, the new IMAX Cineworld boasts eleven screens, RealD 3D and a Starbucks. This new facility had been heavily advertised in the Town Centre, with statues of a Despicable Me minion and the Frozens snowman sitting outside the art gallery (now those statues have a happy home in the cinema itself).
There is also no shortage of eateries in the Southwater area, with a Zizzis, a Nandos, a Pizza Express and the recently revealed Hungry Horse and Wildwood restaurants either having opened or opening soon. The area also includes an 85-room Premier Inn, a new library with over 25,000 bookstand a Butters John Bee set to open on August 16th. A launch party was scheduled for August, but is now going to happen sometime in the Autumn.
This project was suggested a decade ago, and the improvements to the area have taken around two years to build. It has been great success so far, with nearly 15,000 people flocking to the new Southwater building during its first two weeks.
Whats more, the Southwater area isn’t the only part of the Telford Town Centre about to undergo improvement, with plans for the Southern Quarter having been revealed. The large green building that once housed a DIY store is being demolished, to be replaced with new shops and restaurants, and an outdoor area for people eating at those restaurants. Other improvements in the pipeline include an expansion to the International Centre and more spaces added to the car park.
These changes are more than welcome and make the Telford Town Centre so much more active and alive, definitely something to look out for for those who are planning to visit or move into the Telford area.
