As the end of the summer approaches, now is the time to stop worrying about colder weather and longer nights and start thinking about the fabulous new trends to try in your home for the autumn.
With the dropping temperature playing an important part in our approach to interior design as the seasons change, soft furnishings are key. Luxurious throws, cushions and rugs are perhaps the easiest and quickest way to make the transition from August to September weather, and the possibilities are endless when it comes to choosing colours and fabrics.
While the most obvious choices for autumn may be deep reds, gold and browns, this year why not try elegant winter greys or deep blues and purples? In the right textures they can still feel as cosy as warmer colours but can lend a fresher and more modern feel to your home.

To complement this colour scheme, take inspiration from Scandinavian interior design. Achieving the perfect balance between functional cold-weather décor and contemporary style, the Nordic look is ideal for rooms of any shape and size. Many authentic Scandi shops sell online (see above). Alternatively, Barker and Stonehouse and London-based Skandium are great places to start looking for pieces.
Reflecting the outdoors is another great way to decorate with a nod to the new season; instead of bright summery florals, go for prints with bold foliage or forest animals – sticking to accessories will mean this is easy to change again come springtime!

Sticking with accessories, autumn is the perfect time to introduce lamps and candles to your rooms. Candles in particular have been making a serious comeback in recent years with super-luxurious brands like Jo Malone and Diptyque at the helm. While you may not be able to resist the likes of their Rose Geranium or Fig Tree scents, there are more affordable options available for good quality modern candles, such as Mitchell and Peach and Neom Organics.
Continuing with the lighting theme, autumn is the perfect time to experiment with different lamps and shades with cut-out designs or in metallic tones to reflect light. You could even try getting crafty and making your own home accessories, such as these cut-out lanterns (pictured below) for something completely individual. Who knows, with so many options to choose from, you might just find yourself looking forward to September.
