There are many different reasons why you may be thinking about moving a tree to a different location. If you are extending your home, the tree may be in the way, or you may want to take a tree with you to your new home. Trees also sometimes just outgrow their current location, so you need to give them more space in order to ensure that they remain healthy.

It’s important to note that moving a tree is not easy. Often the simplest thing to do is employ the services of an expert in tree removal in Sydney, so that you can just sit back and relax and your tree has the best chance of survival. However, if you do decide to try and move the tree yourself, there are some important things that you need to consider.

Making sure you are capable of completing the project successfully

There are several steps that need to be completed in order to successfully move a tree from one location to another.

  • Pruning the roots of the tree in the season before you are going to move it.
  • Digging up the tree before you move it.
  • Digging a hole big enough for the tree to go into.
  • Moving a potentially heavy tree (possibly with a full root ball).
  • Ongoing care once the tree has been moved, including the provision of a constant water supply for the first twelve months.

It’s worth mentioning that it’s a lot easier to move smaller trees and shrubs than it is to move larger trees. Shrubs that are less than three feet tall, and trees which are less than one inch in diameter can normally be safely moved with bare roots. Larger and older trees must always have as much of the root ball preserved as possible. Every square foot of root ball that is attached to the tree will weigh around one hundred pounds, when you include soil. This means that it’s a good idea to seek professional help when moving large trees.

If you move a tree yourself, the task should always be completed in autumn, winter or early spring, after the leaves have fallen, and before new buds form. You need to think carefully about where you are going to place the tree.

Placing a tree in the best location

A tree that is growing well has a good chance of continuing to grow in the same conditions. Make sure you plant the tree in the same type of soil, facing in the same direction and with the same amount of direct sunlight. If the tree you want to move is not growing well, and in good condition, you need to address this problem before you move it.

Trees can be very sensitive to being moved, and they do not always survive the change. Your tree will stand the best chance of surviving if you move it to a place where there are similar conditions. If you have any doubts about digging up and moving a tree, do not hesitate to seek professional help.
