At least 500 million recessed downlights — that’s the estimated number of can lights found in homes. About 20 million more of these lighting products are sold each year.

The typical LED can lights have a 25,000-hour rating. The LED itself used in such bulbs have an expected life span twice as long as that though. Either way, those figures translate to around three to six years of overall service life.
LED Life Compared to Other Common Lighting Products
There are still about 1.5 billion incandescent light bulbs (also known as the “Edison bulbs”) used in US homes. Although they’re the cheapest type of light bulbs, they also have the shortest life span.
Incandescent bulbs burn out after about 1,000 to 2,000 hours of use. Meaning, a single LED bulb has a lifespan equivalent to 12.5 to 25 Edison bulbs.
Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), on the other hand, can last between 6,000 to 15,000 hours. That’s still a lot less than LED, but far longer than Edison bulbs. This long life span is one of the top reasons they’re still among the most common types of light bulbs used in the US.
However, it seems that they’ll disappear from the market too. For starters, more lighting product manufacturers say that they’ll focus on LED production. US CFL shipments in the second quarter of 2019 dropped by 46.8% compared to the second quarter of 2018.
Getting the Most Out of Your Recessed Led Lights
DIY electrical work can lead to injuries. At the very least, improper handling of electrical jobs can result in property damage.
The thing is, replacing recessed lights with LED bulbs may involve wiring upgrades. Failure to update your lighting modules may result in LED incompatibility. This, in turn, can make your LED lights burn out faster.
That said, older sockets may have transformers that require a lot of power that LEDs can’t handle. As such, it’s best to hire an electrician to make sure you have the right LED transformer in your light sockets. Using the correct transformer, in turn, helps ensure that your LED lights will last as long as you expect them to.
