With 74% of people admitting that they actively worry about not getting a good night’s sleep and only 8% reporting that they wake up feeling refreshed, it’s important to get your bedroom right. There are many factors in a bedroom that can promote sleep such as plants, a suitable mattress and air purifiers. So when you design or decorate your bedroom there are certain aspects to keep in mind to create a space compatible with a restful sleep.

Buy a plant

Certain plants are reported to aid sleep by soothing your senses and reducing your blood pressure and heart  rate. These include jasmine, lavender, rosemary and English ivy. Other plants may purify the air, remove air pollutants or release water vapour. So decide which one is most suitable for you and your green fingers and add to your bedroom.

Carefully select a mattress

The National Sleep Foundation reported that nine out of ten of their survey respondents said their mattress was an important part of their sleep process and it’s recommended that you should change your mattress every seven to ten years. Poor sleep can negatively affect your health and your mood so it’s essential you have a mattress that you find comfortable. When buying a new one you need to test them if possible and choose one that suits you as it’s not as simple as one size fits all.

Bedding is important

Whether you opt for a duvet or sheets and blankets, be aware of the temperature you prefer to sleep in. Change the duvet tog depending on the time of year and test which pillows are most comfortable for your slumber. According to feng shui soothing skin tone colours are the most effective colours for your bedroom as the energy of such colours is conducive to a good sleep because they are nourishing, warm and earthy.

Consider an air purifier

Air quality in your bedroom is likely to affect sleep, especially for those with allergies. In addition, indoor air pollutants can reduce sleep quality and increase sleep disorders such as snoring. An air purifier in your bedroom will make the air fresh and clean and remove air pollutants. Also, opt for battery operated devices where possible and allow your body to regenerate and rest during the night rather than exposing it to EMF pollution.

Preparing your bedroom for sleep is important because certain additions such as plants and air purifiers can make a room more restful and potentially aid sleep. Remember to change your mattress at least every ten years and choose your bedding carefully to suit you. Make sure that your mobile phone is not close to where you sleep and let your mind relax with a book instead of stimulating it with a tablet.
