There is nothing better than waking up in the morning, after a good nights sleep. It leaves you feeling refreshed, awake and energised.Without sleep the body struggles to function, the mind is slow and every thing seems a challenge. I am, and always have been, a huge fan of sleep. I am not a pleasant person to be around, if I do not get at least eight hours sleep a night.

We often take sleep for granted and forget how important it is. 51% of us struggle to get a goodnight sleep at least once a week. Rather than tackling the problem, it is just accepted. Instead of walking around like a zombie, why not do something about it? There are little tricks to make sure you wake up feeling more human each morning.

Making sure your bed is comfortable is just common sense. You have no hope of sleeping if you are tossing and turning all night. The problems can range from the mattress or the bed itself. The Divan Beds Centre – Bed Bases is a great place to start in the hunt for the perfect bed.

Exercising during the day will help to relax the mind and body. You will be tired enough to sleep at night.  Your brain will switch off and your body will be more relaxed.

Setting a regular bedtime will get you and your body into a routine. You will begin to expect sleep at a certain time. Remember what they say, an hours sleep before 12 makes up for two after.

The bedroom needs to be a place of rest and relaxation. It should be soothing and calming, as opposed to busy and chaotic. Soft colours, dimmed lighting and warm fabrics will help you to feel at peace.

Watching television or using devices is a no go. This activity excites the brain, which makes sleep afterwards almost impossible. Before you know it you will have wasted hours playing or watching and missed your sleep schedule.

Reading a book may be old fashioned but it works. And no,reading it on a device does not count! You will lull off into sleep after a few pages, because it is so relaxing.

Caffeine and alcohol are stimulants and get you all worked up. This will have the opposite effect of relaxing you. Instead, you will be over excited and sleep will be forgotten. Try a cup of cocoa instead!

A warm bubbly bath is amazing anyway, but it helps with sleep issues. It is another form of relaxation and is ideal an hour before you get into bed. You are more likely to snuggle down and close your eyes after along, hot soak in the tub.

Most people need darkness to sleep (unlike me, who can nap even in brilliant sunshine.) If this is the case, then buy black out curtains for your room and make sure doors are shut.

Finally, don’t rely on sleeping medication. It is not along-term solution. If sleeping is becoming a real issue then visit your doctor who can make suggestions other than pills.
