As far as skiing accommodation goes, the ski chalet is undoubtedly the most popular with skiers and boarders alike. With many chalets offering spectacular scenic views and some great winter activities, it’s easy to see why travellers continue to opt for this form of lodging year after year.

There is a wide range of ski chalets out there, a type to cater for every need. To help you narrow down your search, check out our guide on the different options that are available to you.

Catered

Catered ski chalets are ideal for groups of families or friends seeking a comfortable base. They are also particularly good for lone travellers looking to meet likeminded skiers and boarders. Catered chalets offer great value for money as all of your meals are included in the price – this sometimes includes après ski snacks.  This kind of accommodation is particularly good for those with special dietary requirements, ensuring that guests can have their food exactly as they would like it. There is also the advantage of having a chalet host, they can offer handy, local advice.

Self-catered

As stress-free and convenient a catered chalet may sound, you may still opt for a self-catered property. Being self-catered allows you to eat out and sample the local cuisine, after all, there are some exceptional restaurants in almost all ski resorts, typically the French and Italian resorts. Self-catering gives you the control of choosing when you’re going to eat and where – ideal for fussy eaters! Going for the self-catered option will usually work out cheaper, although remember, you’ll have to pay for all your food and drinks once you’re out there.

Luxury

A luxury ski chalet can offer the highest possible level of service, from great food to excellent facilities. The great food is one of the main draws to a luxury chalet, many boast chefs who will cook to your likes and expectations, rarely sticking to a fixed menu plan. The majority of luxury chalets include saunas, steam rooms and Jacuzzis (some even contain all three!). Some chalets at the very top of the scale even feature private cinemas, swimming pools, gyms and wine cellars. A luxury chalet will usually feature a balcony or terrace for you to sit upon and enjoy sunny afternoons, safe in the knowledge that everything is being taken care of for you.

Ski-in, ski-out

Many people opt for a chalet that is ski-in, ski-out, meaning that you can walk out of the chalet door and right out onto the slopes. This means no walking in ski boots or riding the bus, you can simply step into your skis and start skiing. Those with children will know the value of this highly convenient approach. Because chalets of this kind are located right up by the pistes, they usually offer breathtaking views of the surrounding slopes and mountains.

Whatever the package, chalets continue to be a firm favourite with travellers. This relaxed and informal approach is a sure way to optimise the fun and allow you and your group to enjoy your skiing or snowboarding to the very full!
