If you’re looking for a rural holiday getaway, staying in a concrete water tank may not be your first idea of a good time. However, a couple from Derbyshire have opened the doors to their new venture having spent a decade converting such a tank into a luxury holiday cottage.
Jim and Lisa Hardy bought the tank, dating back to 1909, from Severn Trent Water. While they were originally planning to use the structure for storage, they have spent ten years converting it into a beautiful holiday cottage. Keep reading to find out more.
The disused tank was originally covered in earth and only accessible through manholes in the roof. However, based on a sketch drawn on the back of an envelope, the couple have completely refurbished the disused tank which has now become Cambridge Lodge, a luxury holiday villa.
The holiday home, which has floors below ground level, now sleeps six people and boasts wi-fi and Smart TV and costs from 386 a week.
Jim said: “At first we thought it might be useful for storage. We excavated the mound at one side to put in a door and then a couple of windows and eventually thought: some people might like to stay here.
There was no master plan, just a sketch on the back of an envelope!”
Cambridge Lodge offers stylish accommodation for up to six people with a kitchen, a utility room, a twin bedroom and bathroom. Downstairs there is a large, part double-height living space with wooden floor, plus a reading and study area and two double bedrooms, one of which is en-suite.
Jim added: “There’s central heating, Wi-fi, Smart TV with Netflix and everything you’d expect in a five-tick standard holiday home.
Of course, there’s restricted headroom in a couple of places, and its not really suitable for children under 10 because the raised patio is unfenced. But its a unique place and its been great to get such enthusiastic feedback from our first visitors.”
